SUMMARY:Coronavirus in Conflict Zones
DESCRIPTION:The 2019-2020 Foreign Policy Forum series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nThursday May 7\, 2020 from 4:00-5:00 PM \nJoin CCWA as we host a virtual Foreign Policy Forum on the impact of COVID-19 in conflict zones. Jarrett Blanc\, from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace\, will discuss the realities of coronavirus in conflict-affected nations\, where there are high levels of displacement and low levels of state capacity. Both states and nonstate actors are using new opportunities  created by the pandemic to advance their own\, pre-existing political goals. How has the United States reacted to the coronavirus in Iraq and Afghanistan? How will actions abroad during the pandemic impact the spread of extremism or progress in peace processes in post-conflict states? \n \nJarrett Blanc is a senior fellow in the Geoeconomics and Strategy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Under President Obama\, Blanc was the deputy lead coordinator and State Department coordinator for Iran nuclear implementation at the U.S. Department of State. Prior to that\, he was principal deputy special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAP)\, where he played a crucial role in developing and implementing the international security assistance plan for Afghanistan. Blanc is a returning guest\, as he has previously spoken for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. \nThis CCWA forum will also be a part of the World Affairs Councils of America’s national “Putting the World back Together” virtual summit. Open to the public\, this summit brings together leaders\, experts\, and citizens across the nation to tackle the central question: How will the world be put back together as we chart our way through the new circumstances caused by this coronavirus pandemic? Click here for more information. \n  \nRegistration:  \nThis Foreign Policy Forum is at capacity. The Forum will be available as a podcast after the event. For upcoming Forums\, please visit our calendar.\n

SUMMARY:Trade\, Politics\, and the Global Economic Outlook in 2020
DESCRIPTION:The 2019-2020 Foreign Policy Forum series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nGlobal growth slowed considerably over the last three quarters of 2018 and into 2019\, and rising trade and global tensions have increased uncertainty in both the global trading system and in international cooperation in general. In an overall economic outlook published in November of 2019\, it was projected that world economic growth would be at a decade low in 2020. Join us in January as we host Marcus Noland (PhD) for a broad discussion of global economic trends and the international financial outlook for 2020. How will governments react to global economic challenges in the new year? What policy shifts can be made within the U.S.\, and internationally\, to account for low growth trends? \nMarcus Noland is the Executive Vice President and Director of Studies of the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He has been with the Peterson Institute since 1985 and served as the Deputy Director from 2009-2012. Noland’s research focuses on the intersection of economics\, political science\, and international relations\, and he has specific knowledge and interest in Asia\, Africa\, and the Middle East. Noland has authored over a dozen books and has written many scholarly articles on U.S. trade policy\, the diverse economies of the Asia-Pacific region\, and international economics. \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students $5 \nLocation: The Union Club\, Wedgwood Room. 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nRegistration for this event has closed. \nParking: \nParking at the Union Club is $10 (cash only) for valet service. SUMMARY:Back to (Merely) Bad: The Future of U.S. Policy Towards Iran
DESCRIPTION:The 2019-2020 Foreign Policy Forum series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas. \nOver the last few months\, the imposition of sanctions\, maritime and drone incidents\, and escalating rhetoric between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran have led onlookers to fear a possible conflict in the Middle East. Beyond these recent events\, the U.S.-Iran relationship is a complicated one with a vast history that merits deeper understanding. The Iran nuclear deal (Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action) also warrants attention when considering the future of relations between the U.S. and Iran\, as well as Iran and other Western nations. Lastly\, the use\, and misuse\, of sanctions against the Islamic Republic of Iran adds a level of complication to the already fragile relationship. Join us on October 30 as Jarrett Blanc\, Senior Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment\, addresses these issues and options to break the negative cycle between the United States and Iran. What options are there for de-escalation of the current crisis? What would a return to diplomacy look like? How do all of these factors effect U.S. national security priorities? \nJarrett Blanc is a senior fellow in the Geoeconomics and Strategy Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Prior to joining Carnegie\, he was the deputy lead coordinator and State Department coordinator for Iran nuclear implementation at the U.S. Department of State under President Obama. In this role\, he was responsible for the full and effective implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for Iran’s nuclear program. This included United States and Iranian commitments to sanctions. \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students $5 \nLocation: The Union Club\, Wedgwood Room. 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nRegistration: This event is SOLD OUT.  \nParking: \nParking at the Union Club is $10 (cash only) for valet service. SUMMARY:The U.S.-South Korea Alliance: Addressing North Korea and a Changing World
DESCRIPTION:Ambassador Kathleen Stephens\, former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea\, is currently the President and CEO of the Korea Economic Institute of America. Ambassador Stephens will start our Foreign Policy Forum season with a discussion of the dynamic alliance between the United States and South Korea confronted with new and evolving challenges. Crucially\, the alliance is now tasked with maintaining military preparedness against North Korea while simultaneously pursuing diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. This\, however\, comes amid rising competition between the U.S. and China\, South Korea’s largest trading partner and a key player in resolving the North Korea issue\, as well as a more critical view from the White House on the role of allies. Though the path forward for the alliance is not yet clear\, close coordination on a range of issues will be needed to advance the shared goals of both countries. How will the United States and South Korea continue to shape their alliance while facing these new challenges? \nAmbassador Stephens retired from the Foreign Service in 2015 and assumed leadership of KEI as President and CEO in September of 2018. Ambassador Stephens was a career diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service from 1978 to 2015. She was U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea (2008-2011) and was the first woman and first Korean speaker to serve in that position. Korea has been significant throughout Ambassador Stephens’ life\, as she served in Korea as a Peace Corps volunteer and trainer from 1975 to 1977. Other Foreign Service assignments included postings to Portugal\, former Yugoslavia\, China\, Northern Ireland\, and India. In addition\, Ambassador Stephens served in a number of policy positions in Washington including acting Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs (2012)\, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs (2005-2007)\, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs (2003-2005)\, and National Security Council Director for European Affairs at the Clinton White House. \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students $5 \nLocation: The Union Club\, Wedgwood Room. 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nRegistration: \nOnline registration for this event has closed. If you have any questions or would still like to attend\, please call Andrea at 216-282-1041.\nParking:  \nParking at the Union Club is $12 (cash only) for valet service. Additional parking options include other lots in the downtown area and street parking\, if parking restrictions are not in place. Car services\, such as Uber and Lyft\, are always an option. SUMMARY:Redefining National Security: Preparing for Future Foreign Policy Challenges
DESCRIPTION:From climate change to infectious disease and cyber security\, global trends are increasingly shaping American security interests both at home and abroad. Additionally\, the rise of identity based extremism and the forever wars that America has engaged in post 9/11 continue to threaten our national security and foreign policy. These issues are just some of those outside of the umbrella of “traditional security” that impact United States national security. It can be argued that national security extends well beyond protecting our borders and military interests; instead\, national security should include the well-being of citizens and inclusion of global trends that continually challenge U.S. interests. How can the U.S. develop a national security strategy to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead? \nJoin us on May 15\, as we host Ambassador Bonnie Jenkins\, Founder and Executive Director of Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security (WCAPS)\, Sanam Naraghi-Anderlini\, Founder and Chief Executive Director of International Civil Society Action Network\, and Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley\, Third Way Cyber Enforcement Initiative Advisory Board Member and former U.S. Ambassador to Malta. \nThis program is presented in partnership with Women of Color Advancing Peace and Security. CCWA would also like to thank our media sponsor\, 90.3 WCPN. \nSchedule: \n5:30 PM Reception \n6:00 PM Program begins \n6:45 PM Q&A \n7:15 PM Program concludes \nAdmission: Non-Members $25; Members $15; Students $5 \nLocation: The Union Club\, Ballroom. 1211 Euclid Ave\, Cleveland\, Ohio 44115. \nRegistration: \nOnline registration for this event has closed.
