SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: COVID-19 and Women's Leadership Around the World
DESCRIPTION:In October 2020\, the world will mark the 20th anniversary of the landmark Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women\, Peace and Security\, which addressed the importance of women’s political participation for sustainable peace\, among other issues. \nThis anniversary comes as the coronavirus pandemic continues to upend lives around the globe. For women\, these affects are especially acute. In countries both industrialized and developed\, women are facing multiple threats – physical\, emotional\, sexual\, and psychological – and even worse in situations of conflict and humanitarian crises; and job loss and economic instability. Complicating matters is the fact that women often have little to no advocates when it comes to making crucial decisions that affect their lives − women make up only 10 percent of national leaders. \nWhat is the situation for women globally? And how has it impacted women’s political leadership? What will women’s political demands be worldwide as we cautiously move into a “new normal?” Will anything change? \n\n\nPanelists\n\nSharon Bhagwan-Rolls\nBoard Co-Chair\, Global Fund for Women\nAnna Powles\, Ph.D.\nSenior Lecturer\, Centre for Defense and Security Studies\, Massey University\nGina Torry\nDirector\, International Center for Dialogue and Peacebuilding\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN\n\n\nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: How Will Coronavirus Change the World? How Should We Change It?
DESCRIPTION:The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted life across the globe\, profoundly affecting supply chains\, healthcare\, and the economy. It’s also exposed the harsh realities of racial\, ethnic\, economic\, political\, and health disparities the effects of which many countries have tried to minimize or ignore for decades. \nNow\, as the pandemic slows before a probable second wave\, global leaders and governments are weighing options and contemplating decisions that will define history and shape the world for years to come. What kind of world can we expect post-crisis? Will authoritarian regimes thrive or fail? What will become of the many conflicts in the Middle East? Perhaps\, more importantly\, what kind of world should we envision and work towards? \nDr. Marshall and Dr. Hazburn serve on the Editorial Committee of Middle East Report\, a quarterly publication that\, since 1971\, has provided critical\, alternative reporting and analysis on the Middle East and American foreign policy. The forthcoming issue of the Middle East Report offers new visions and prescriptions for a progressive American foreign policy. \nThe livestream will be available at cityclub.org at 7:30 p.m. \nPanelists:  \nWaleed Hazbun\, Ph.D.\nRichard L. Chambers Professor of Middle Eastern Studies\, Department of Political Science\, The University of Alabama \nShana Marshall\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Director\, Institute for Middle East Studies\, Elliot School of International Affairs\, The George Washington University \nMilena Sterio\, J.D.\nProfessor of Law & Associate Dean for Academic Enrichment\, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law \nModerator:  \nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: What's Next for the U.S. and Iran?
DESCRIPTION:On January 3\, 2020\, the United States carried out a drone strike near Baghdad International Airport in Iraq which resulted in the death of nine people\, including Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani\, a powerful security and intelligence commander and longtime leader of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force. \nOn January\, 8\, 2020\, Iran retaliated by firing missiles at two American bases in Iraq. While no Iraqi\, American\, or coalition causalities were reported\, recent reports indicate several American troops were treated for concussion symptoms from the blast. Hours after the missile strike\, Iranian forces\, bracing for a U.S. counterattack that never came\, accidentally shot down an Ukraine International Airlines jetliner\, killing all 176 people aboard shortly after take-off. \nIranians\, initially swept up in a wave of nationalism and unity after the death of Soleimani\, are now protesting in the streets over their government’s handling of the downed jetliner and the threat of more hardships caused by pending U.S. sanctions. \nHow did we get here? Will Iran strike again to take revenge for the death of Soleimani? What are the options\, for Iran\, the United States and their allies\, moving forward? \nPanelists:  \nMilena Sterio\, J.D.\nProfessor of Law & Associate Dean for Academic Enrichment\, Cleveland-Marshall College of Law\nNeda A. Zawahri\, Ph.D.\nAssociate Professor\, Department of Political Science\, Cleveland State University \nModerator:  \nTony Ganzer\nHost/Producer\, WCPN

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: How We Fight and Why it Matters\, Ethics in Foreign Military Operations Today
DESCRIPTION:Military ethics has primarily grabbed the public’s attention thanks to Hollywood. Through movies such as the Caine Mutiny\, Platoon\, and A Few Good Men\, audiences have shared in the dilemmas of men and women in uniform as they struggle to discern what is right and wrong\, and then try to do the right thing. Through television\, and now through social media\, increasingly the real-world rights and wrongs of our military are brought into our living rooms or onto our phones with ever increasing speed. \nForeign military interventions of the past two decades in Afghanistan and Iraq —including scandals such as prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib — have shaped current ethics in the U.S. military. How the U.S. military conducts itself when deployed overseas is impacted by the kinds of missions that it is increasingly asked to carry out — not just warfare but also elements of more complex nation-building exercises — and by nature of the evolving threats it faces\, suchhappy as non-state actors and the asymmetrical tactics that they employ\, including in new theaters such as cyberspace. \nHow have military ethics evolved in the first two decades of the 21st century? How different are military ethics today and how does the current U.S. military enforce its ethical norms? How does U.S. military ethics\, or its failures\, impact foreign perceptions of U.S. policy and affect international outcomes? Why does it matter and what are the American public’s views on these issues? \nPanelists include:  \nGrant Goodrich\nExecutive Director\, Great Lakes Energy Institute; Iraq war veteran and U.S. Naval Academy Alumnus \nJames C. Johnson\nDirector\, Henry T. King\, Jr. War Crimes Research Office\, Case Western Reserve University School of Law \nLisa N. Lindsay\nCoordinator\, Inamori Center for Ethics and Excellence\, Case Western Reserve University

SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: Music as Political Diplomacy
DESCRIPTION:While international affairs seem dominated by the high politics of official representatives and ambassadors\, a great deal of transnational interaction happens at the levels of citizens and collectives. An increasingly popular form of cultural exchange and citizen diplomacy is expressed through music. What goes into these efforts? How do such exchanges shape the foreign artists as well as the American musicians? What is the future of this kind of advocacy and what are its limits? \nPanelists include:  \nAngelin Chang\, DMA\, JD\nPiano; Coordinator of Keyboard Studies; Coordinator of Chamber Music\, Cleveland State University \nChris Jenkins\, MIA\nAssociate Dean for Academic Support; Liaison to the Office of Equity\, Diversity\, and Inclusion; and Deputy Title IX Coordinator\, Oberlin Coordinator

SUMMARY:Cleveland International Film Festival: The Pursuit
DESCRIPTION:CCWA is proud to be a community partner again at this year’s Cleveland International Film Festival. Our partner film\, The Pursuit\, will be screening on March 28 at 4:45PM\, March 29 at 7:40PM and March 31 at 9:30AM. Use the code CCWA to receive a discount when purchasing tickets. \nAbout the film: \nAward-winning economist\, Arthur Brooks\, places himself at the intersection of culture and politics in The Pursuit\, a thought-provoking documentary exploring our global economy and its impact on the citizens of the world. The film travels the globe seeking understanding of impoverished communities and their progress—or stagnation—as a result of capitalism\, socialistic ideals\, and state-run welfare systems. While many immigrants to the United States and newly independent nations sought freedom from socialist governments to benefit from capitalism\, the present-day political climate complicates both economies\, leaving plenty of room for healthy discussion. Brooks visits the bustling streets of Mumbai\, a once-thriving coal mining town in Kentucky\, the presumably happiest nation of Denmark\, a street rally in Barcelona\, Spain\, and an Indian monastery for a truly global view on these topics. Rather than embracing a definitive political stance\, The Pursuit offers an opportunity for genuine conversation about individuals’ opinions\, experiences\, and views of the best ways we can all support each other—regardless of class or social status—in our pursuit of happiness. \nFilm Forum: \nAfter the March 28 screening\, join us for a discussion on the question: If capitalism is the answer\, then what’s the question? \nPanelists\nSusan Helper\, Ph.D.; Frank Tracy Carlton Professor of Economics\, Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University\nJohn Papola; Director\, “The Pursuit”\nMarcus R. Schultz-Bergin\, Ph.D.; Assistant College Lecturer\, Department of Philosophy & Comparative Religion\, Cleveland State University\nMark E. Schweitzer\, Ph.D.; Senior Vice President\, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\nModerator\nMichael K. McIntyre; Sound of Ideas host\, ideastream®\, and columnist\, The Plain Dealer \nFor more information about our partner film and the film festival\, and to purchase tickets\, visit CIFF online.
