SUMMARY:Can the U.S. Reset the Agenda with Latin America?
DESCRIPTION:The Summit of the Americas\, hosted in San Diego in June\, brought about tense interactions between the U.S. and our hemispheric neighbors to the south. Debate about the guestlist\, threats of boycott\, and challenges to the agenda were just a few of the reasons many felt the gathering did not accomplish as much as it could have.  Ambassador McKinley will argue that a wholesale reset of the relationship between the U.S. and the rest of the Americas is in order. With the recent elections of several leftist leaders in Latin America and increasing Chinese investment seen by these leaders as a solution to ongoing economic woes\, Ambassador McKinley will warn that the time to reframe the relationship and set the groundwork for productive cooperation moving forward is now. \nAmbassador P. Michael McKinley is Senior Adviser in the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. A four-time ambassador to Peru\, Colombia\, Afghanistan and Brazil\, his 37-year career as a diplomat covered issues in development\, trade\, and peace negotiations. He also oversaw refugee resettlement programs for populations in Africa\, Europe\, and Latin America from 2001-2004. We are excited to reconnect in person with our Citizen Diplomat volunteers and our members for a fun evening featuring an interactive session with intercultural training consultant\, Nicole Barile\, followed by a reception with networking and refreshments. \nIf you love to travel or meet friends from other cultures here in Cleveland\, and wish to sharpen your cultural toolkit\, Nicole Barile will offer a fun and introductory session to intercultural competency. We are excited to offer this complimentary program as a thank-you to our dedicated Citizen Diplomats and members (like you!) with an exploration into the core principles of global competency. \nThe session will give you an introduction to CCWA’s Global Competency training. DESCRIPTION:Join the Cleveland Council on World Affairs for an hour-long virtual session on issues of immigration and global migration. We invite middle school and high school teachers (grade 7-12) to participate in the session and explore the history of immigration to the United States and current U.S. policy\, as well as the issue of the global refugee crisis. The rapid take-over of Kabul by the Taliban has prompted debate about the future of Afghanistan\, the impact of U.S. policy decisions\, and the moral responsibility that America bears following its decades of intervention. What lessons can the United States learn from our prolonged engagement? Join us for this Foreign Policy Forum with Adam Weinstein\, from the Quincy Institute\, who will offer his thoughts on such lessons and discuss prospects for Afghanistan and for the United States’ future engagement in the region. \nAdam Weinstein is a Research Fellow with the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. He previously worked for KPMG’s international trade practice and assisted multinational clients in navigating Asia’s changing trade landscape\, managing sanctions risk\, and utilizing free trade agreements. SUMMARY:Happy Dog Takes on the World: 10 Years of War in Syria
DESCRIPTION:In March of 2011\, protestors took to the streets in Syria to show solidarity with the growing pro-democracy movements in Libya\, Egypt\, and Tunisia. Across the region\, these protests sparked a domino effect of citizens taking to the streets to demand democratic reforms and greater freedoms; on a larger scale\, this period became known as the Arab Spring. In Syria\, however\, the initial uprisings were followed by a government and military crackdown\, successive resignations from Syrian government officials\, human rights abuses\, and an exodus of thousands of Syrian residents. This shaped the start of the Syrian Civil War. \nTen years after the first protests began\, the brutal violence has subsided\, but peace remains elusive. An estimated 593\,000 people have died\, more than 11 million currently need humanitarian assistance\, approximately six million people are displaced within Syria\, and more than million Syrian refugees have relocated across the globe. Outside of the humanitarian disaster and need for assistance\, the Syrian conflict has numerous domestic actors competing for government control as well as larger geopolitical implications\, as the U.S.\, Iran\, Russia\, and Turkey all have a hand at the table. \nJoin us for a conversation on the state of affairs in Syria\, 10 years since those first uprisings\, and what the ongoing instability there means for the region. \n\nSpeaker\n\nRobert S. DESCRIPTION:In America and other Western democracies\, older industrial communities are in a painful process of economic transition. These geographic regions were once economic powerhouses\, but have experienced a decline in manufacturing\, and a subsequent decline in local economies\, property taxes\, education\, and other community assets. Research has shown that when election season rolls around\, residents of these geographic regions are also increasingly likely to latch onto populist candidates like Donald Trump or Marine Le Pen. \nNeopopulism thrives in rust belt communities across the globe – communities where residents are responsive to the messages of nationalism\, nativism\, retreat from the international community\, and nostalgia for days gone by offered up by right-wing populists. Yet\, evidence also suggests that when these communities have economic hope\, the appeal of populism wanes.
