This past year more than ever, we have learned that not all disasters are limited by national borders. Whether COVID-19, climate change, or political unrest, when international disasters occur around the world it impacts Americans here at home. The U.S. Government is the world’s leading donor of humanitarian assistance, reaching millions of people around the globe with life-saving aid every year. Its work is a demonstration of American values, strengthens U.S. national security, and helps the American economy. With all of this in mind, how will the Biden Administration focus on aligning its humanitarian work with its domestic priorities?
The Cleveland Council on World Affairs is proud to host a Foreign Policy Forum with Neilesh Shelat from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for a conversation on U.S. humanitarian policy. Mr. Shelat is Deputy Assistant to the Administrator of USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, which is the U.S. government lead organization for international disaster response.

In light of the ongoing evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of our members, speakers, and staff remain a priority for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. We ask that all Foreign Policy Forum attendees agree to maintain vigilance to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by:
- Refraining from attending Foreign Policy Forum events if you:
– Have had recent contact with an infected person
– Are experiencing symptoms or feeling unwell - Maintaining a vaccination and booster schedule appropriate for your own risk level and health implications.
- Continuing to follow local health authorities’ guidelines in an evolving environment.
- Agreeing to comply with requests, such as masking, if necessary, made by CCWA staff to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
