Event begins at 5:30pm
As Xi Jinping begins his unprecedented third term as chairman of the Chinese Communist Party and tensions loom large over China – U.S. relations, Susan Shirk, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs, will share her research on what is driving the changes she first noticed in China in the early 2000s. Explaining the personalistic system of politics in the one party communist China, she will lay out how the country’s foreign and domestic policies have diminishing returns in a faltering global economy, summarizing the analysis from her most recent book, Overreach: How China Derailed its Peaceful Rise. Books will be available for purchase through a partnership with ClevoBooks.
