CCWA’s popular How to Plan a Refugee Camp event is back for a third time! Paul Frankmann, a former Exploring Humanitarian Law trainer at the American Red Cross, will lead a hands-on workshop analyzing humanitarian law and the policies that protect refugees and internally displaced persons, as well as demonstrating how to ethically build the camps that house them.
We will also be joined by Loung Ung, who will share her personal story of fleeing Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge genocide and living as a refugee before relocating to the United States in 1980. Loung Ung is a bestselling author, activist, and co-screenplay writer. Her bestselling memoir, First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, was a 2001 recipient of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians’ Association award for Excellence in Adult Non-Fiction Literature. For over two decades, Loung Ung has dedicated her time to helping Cambodia heal from the traumas of war.
The hands-on workshop is designed to help participants understand the realities of living in and planning a refugee camp. At the end of this workshop, you will have a better sense of what the refugee experience is like for those impacted by displacement, and how the international community can help.
This year’s How to Plan a Refugee Camp will be hosted at Market Garden Brewery.

- Refraining from attending Foreign Policy Forum events if you:
– Have had recent contact with an infected person
– Are experiencing symptoms or feeling unwell - Maintaining a vaccination and booster schedule appropriate for your own risk level and health implications.
- Continuing to follow local health authorities’ guidelines in an evolving environment.
- Agreeing to comply with requests, such as masking, if necessary, made by CCWA staff to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
