The 2019-2020 Foreign Policy Forum series is presented by Hitachi Healthcare Americas.
With more than three decades of experience as an American diplomat, Ambassador Burns played a significant role in the most important diplomatic events of his time- including the end of the Cold War, post-Cold War relations between the United States and Russia, the changing international landscape post-9/11, and the nuclear talks with Iran. The Ambassador’s experience reminds us of the importance of diplomacy and cooperation, especially in times of international and domestic political change. What can effective American leadership look like in today’s world?
Ambassador William J. Burns is author of ‘The Back Channel: A Memoir of American Diplomacy and the Case for its Renewal’ and president of the Carnegie Endowment for Peace. He retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2014 after a thirty-three year diplomatic career. He holds the highest rank in the Foreign Service, career ambassador, and is only the second serving career diplomat in history to become deputy secretary of state.
Copies of Ambassador Burns’ book, The Back Channel: A Memoir of American Diplomacy and the Case for its Renewal, will be available for purchase at the event.

In the event that a CCWA forum is cancelled, we will be able to offer complimentary admission to another Foreign Policy Forum within one year.
Parking:
Parking at the Union Club is $10 (cash only) for valet service. Additional parking options include other lots in the downtown area and street parking, if parking restrictions are not in place. Car services, such as Uber and Lyft, are always an option. CCWA also encourages walking, biking, or public transportation, including the RTA.

In light of the ongoing evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of our members, speakers, and staff remain a priority for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. We ask that all Foreign Policy Forum attendees agree to maintain vigilance to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by:
- Refraining from attending Foreign Policy Forum events if you:
– Have had recent contact with an infected person
– Are experiencing symptoms or feeling unwell - Maintaining a vaccination and booster schedule appropriate for your own risk level and health implications.
- Continuing to follow local health authorities’ guidelines in an evolving environment.
- Agreeing to comply with requests, such as masking, if necessary, made by CCWA staff to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
