Cleveland Council on World Affairs Announces Board of Directors Leadership Transition

The Board of Directors of the Cleveland Council on World Affairs has elected Carter Strang as its new Chairman. He will assume his new role on July 1, 2020. Carter has been an active participant in CCWA’s programs over the years, and is a valued member of CCWA’s education committee. “We are excited about the energy, expertise and talent that Carter brings to his new role. His passion for our mission is evident in his active engagement across all our program areas,” says Carina Van Vliet, CCWA’s CEO.

Carter Strang is a partner in the law firm Tucker Ellis. He has served as both president of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and the Federal Bar Association District of Ohio Chapter, and is involved in a number of non-profit boards in Northeast Ohio. Prior to his legal career, Carter worked in education as an award-winning high school teacher and coach.

CCWA’s long-time Chairman of the Board, Wael Khoury, M.D., Head of Cardiology at Marymount Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, will step down from this role on June 30, 2020. Wael Khoury first served as the Chairman of the CCWA Board of Directors from 2012 until 2015, and again from 2016 until the end of June 2020. Wael will continue to be an active member of CCWA and the Board.

During Wael’s tenure, CCWA significantly expanded its reach by growing participation and engagement across all our program areas. CCWA also developed a whole new set of programs, including our annual Global Impact Award event and the programs of the Maura O’Donnell-McCarthy Center for Global Understanding. “Wael’s passion for the work and the mission of the council is clear to everyone who has had the pleasure of working with him.  CCWA greatly benefited from his generous and enthusiastic leadership over these years, and we collectively thank him for his exceptional dedication to the organization,” reflects CCWA’s CEO Carina Van Vliet.

The mission of the Cleveland Council on World Affairs is to inspire engagement in international affairs and world cultures through education, citizen diplomacy and civic dialogue.
