The Cleveland Council on World Affairs (CCWA) is proud to announce its 2021-2022 FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation Foreign Policy Forum series. This year, our Foreign Policy Forums will explore a world reshaped by the global pandemic, as well as evolving geopolitical trends that matter for the United States. FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation is partnering with CCWA – as our Season Sponsor – to support our public speaker programs throughout the year.
“Our speaker forums are open to everyone – we welcome our community to join us in exploring global issues behind the headlines, and the people, events and trends that shape the news. As we well learned this past year, global issues directly impact us right here in Northeast Ohio. So we want to give our local community a voice in discussions about the United States’ role in the world and how we are tackling the major global issues that are currently shaping the world’s future. We are deeply grateful to FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation for supporting our local dialogue on these vital issues,” says Carina Van Vliet, CCWA’s Chief Executive Officer.
“As a global company in the United States, we cannot stress enough the importance of being alert to international events and developing deep insights from a global perspective to make wise local decisions,” says Jun Higuchi, President and CEO of FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation and FUJIFILM Medical Systems U.S.A., Inc., and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of FUJIFILM Sonosite, Inc. “We are honored to continue our sponsorship of CCWA’s annual public speaker programs. The caliber of speakers and quality of insights gained at this forum are first class, and we see this as an excellent opportunity for all to open our doors to the world around us.”
FUJIFILM Healthcare Americas Corporation is a leading provider of innovative diagnostic imaging products and medical informatics solutions for the evolving needs of healthcare facilities, headquartered in Twinsburg, Ohio. CCWA’s Foreign Policy Forum series kicks off on September 21, 2021, with a timely program entitled Afghanistan’s Lessons for a More Sustainable Foreign Policy, with Adam Weinstein from the Quincy Institute. Descriptions of our fall Foreign Policy Forum programs are included below.
This season, we are planning to return to in-person programming. We ask that all event attendees be vaccinated and wear masks during CCWA forums. CCWA will continue to follow public health recommendations and revisit COVID-related policies, as needed. “After last year, we are all looking forward to connecting with one another again. At CCWA, we very much look forward to welcoming our community back to our programs and providing a space for conversation on issues that matter globally and locally,” says Carina Van Vliet.

Afghanistan’s Lessons for a More Sustainable Foreign Policy
Tuesday, September 21, 2021
After two decades of U.S. engagement in Afghanistan, America’s longest war is ending with a dramatic evacuation ahead of the deadline set for the formal withdrawal of U.S. forces. The rapid take-over of Kabul by the Taliban has prompted debate about the future of Afghanistan, the impact of U.S. policy decisions, and the moral responsibility that America bears following its decades of intervention. What lessons can the United States learn from our prolonged engagement? Adam Weinstein, from the Quincy Institute, will offer his thoughts on such lessons and discuss prospects for Afghanistan and for the United States’ future engagement in the region.

The transatlantic agenda is vast, including issues of common interest such as climate change, cybersecurity, and trade. However, trends in both Europe and in the United States continue to impact cooperation.
